DIY Espresso Martinis: Homemade Happiness in a Martini Glass

An Espresso Martini is one of those beverages that evokes a phenomenon I like to call The Shirley Temple Effect. If someone at your table orders an Espresso Martini, you might feel socially compelled to do the same.

“This place has Espresso Martinis?! I’ll have one too!”
“Forget my order, I want what they’re having!”
“Five-dollar Espresso Martinis on Thursdays? Say less!”

Unlike an Aperol Spritz or classic Cosmopolitan, the Espresso Martini may not be our initial go-to. But as soon as we’re reminded of this decadent happy-hour favorite, it becomes an obvious choice.

Following a recent surge in popularity, coffee drinkers and cocktail enthusiasts alike have delved deeper into exploring the world of caffeinated espresso beverages. Many establishments are refining their recipes to claim the bragging rights of serving the best Espresso Martini in town.

So, we've established that the Espresso Martini is a fan favorite. But can we make it at home? Absolutely.

It doesn’t take a licensed mixologist to craft a decent Espresso Martini, despite its sophisticated appearance. Which is why Sound Coffee has crafted a simple and effective recipe for mixing this classy cocktail in the comfort of your own kitchen.

DIY Espresso Martini Recipe
By Sound Coffee

Prep 5 min
Total 10 min
Serves 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Tito's vodka
  • 1 oz Galliano coffee liqueur
  • 1 shot of Green Room Espresso
  • Simple syrup, to taste (start with 1/4 oz and adjust as needed)
  • Espresso powder or cocoa powder, for garnish
  • Coffee beans, for garnish

Instructions

1. Brew The Espresso
Prepare a shot of Green Room espresso and let it cool slightly. If you prefer a chilled drink, you can let it cool completely or refrigerate it for a few minutes.

2. Prepare the Shaker:
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. This will help chill your drink properly.

3. Combine Ingredients
Add 1 oz of Tito's Vodka, 1 oz of Galliano Coffee Liqueur, the shot of espresso, and the desired amount of simple syrup into the shaker. Start with 1/4 oz of simple syrup and adjust to taste.

4. Shake:
Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. This not only chills the drink but also creates a delightful frothy top.

5. Strain and Serve:
Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass. If you want an extra-chilled martini, you can chill the glass in the freezer beforehand.

6. Garnish:
Lightly dust some espresso powder or cocoa powder on top for an elegant touch. Add a few coffee beans as a sophisticated garnish.

7. Enjoy!
