Our Story
Crafting Sound Coffee: From Vision to Reality
Sometimes gifts keep on giving in unexpected ways. Over a decade ago, Jeff's mother-in-law (Sarah's mom) gave him green coffee beans for Christmas, along with home roasting instructions she printed off the Internet. She said, "I know how much you love coffee, so I thought you might enjoy roasting the beans yourself. They say fresh roasted coffee tastes better."
We started with an old 1980s popcorn popper we bought on eBay that held less than half a cup of beans at a time. Before long, we were hooked. Jeff went from being someone who always needed a splash of milk in his coffee to drinking it black because the freshness and the flavor really are that much better.
Soon enough, we invested in a home roaster so we could roast a higher quantity of beans and better control roasting outcomes. And then something interesting happened: the neighbors started knocking. Friends started asking for bags. What began as a hobby in our garage — a small 3lb machine, a lot of trial and error, and a whole lot of passion — started feeling like something more.
From the Garage to the Community
We took Sound Coffee to farmers markets across Connecticut, and the feedback was overwhelming. People weren't just buying coffee — they were coming back week after week, telling us about their morning routines, their favorite roasts, what the coffee meant to them. That community connection became the heartbeat of everything we do. In 2023, we took a big leap and moved our roastery to 2040 Main Street in Bridgeport, giving us the space and equipment to grow while staying rooted in the city we love.
Growing with Connecticut
2024 was a milestone year. We had the privilege of opening an outpost at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, bringing Sound Coffee to thousands of music fans and event-goers. That same year, at the beginning of 2024, we opened our second café in the vibrant Blackrock neighborhood of Bridgeport — a community that welcomed us with open arms. And in 2024 we partnered with Sacred Heart University to create the Pioneer Blend, a custom roast exclusively for their community that now supplies their on-campus café. Each of these moments reminded us that Sound Coffee isn't just about great coffee — it's about showing up for the people and places that make Connecticut special.
Our Team
None of this happens without our incredible team. From our baristas and coffee leaders to our roasters and operations folks — they are Sound Coffee just as much as the beans are. You'll find them behind the counter at our cafés, dialing in espresso, and making sure every cup is worth your morning. We love our team deeply, and we think you will too when you meet them. And if you want to bring the Sound Coffee experience to your next event, our professional mobile barista team is available for corporate events, weddings, farmers markets, and private parties. There's nothing quite like a freshly pulled espresso at a celebration you've put your heart into — let us help make it memorable.
What's Next
The journey that started with a popcorn popper in our kitchen isn't slowing down. 2026 is shaping up to be our most exciting year yet, with some amazing new projects we can't wait to share. Stay tuned — the best is still ahead.
